Brickendon helps Doctors Adrift to raise £100,000

January 9, 2017

Brickendon is proud to sponsor two British doctors who are seeking to raise £100,000 for charity by becoming the fastest pair to row 3,600 miles across the Indian Ocean in just 84 days.

Ted Welman and Jack Faulkner will leave from Exmouth, Western Australia, in April bound for Port Louis, Mauritius. They will spend almost three months at sea, burning 8,000 calories a day rowing in two-hour shifts, 24-hours-a-day for the duration of the crossing. Their aim is to raise £100,000 for Médecins Sans Frontières, a global charity which provides much-needed emergency medical care in areas affected by conflict, epidemics or natural disasters.

Despite nearly 4,000 people climbing Mount Everest and 536 going into space, only 20 rowing boats have ever crossed the Indian Ocean, and only four of those were pairs. Welman and Faulkner’s motivation is their first-hand experience and appreciation of the importance of first responders and emergency healthcare in times of crisis. “In the UK we are incredibly lucky to have such a comprehensive health service, free at the point of delivery and available to everyone who needs it,” said Welman and Faulkner. “MSF helps people worldwide where need is greatest, delivering emergency medical aid to those affected by conflict, disasters or exclusion from healthcare.”

Brickendon Chief Executive Chris Burke, welcomed the opportunity to sponsor such an exciting and worthwhile event and cause. “We are very excited and privileged to be involved with Doctors Adrift and will be cheering for them and promoting their cause as much as we can for the next few months,” he said.
